Clean Dakar — Home Waste Collection

Home waste collection subscription service in neighborhoods not covered by CBG, with selective sorting and valorization of recyclable materials.

Problem

The Problem

Dakar produces 3,000 tonnes of waste daily but less than 60% is properly collected. Peripheral neighborhoods (Pikine, Guédiawaye, Parcelles) are neglected by the CBG public service. Illegal dumping, odors, and flooding caused by waste-blocked gutters cause serious public health problems. Uncollected plastics and organic materials end up in the ocean or are burned.

Opportunity

The Opportunity

The waste circular economy in Senegal is booming: plastics sell for 80-120 FCFA/kg, compost at 15,000 FCFA/tonne. Dakar City Hall is seeking private partners to extend collection coverage. Companies and hotels are looking for certified waste management solutions for their CSR reporting.

The Concept

Clean Dakar offers a door-to-door subscription: for 3,000 to 6,000 FCFA per month, a collector comes 3 times a week with an electric cart. Waste is sorted at source (color-coded bins provided with subscription). Plastics and metals are resold to local recyclers; organic waste is composted and resold to market gardeners. Recycling revenues subsidize subscriptions for the poorest households. A mobile app lets subscribers geolocate their collector and report illegal dumps.

The "Secret Sauce" (USP)

  • Dual revenue model: household subscriptions + resale of recyclable materials — recycling finances collection for the poorest
  • Clean electric cart: modern and quiet image, zero noise or air pollution, solar-recharged
  • Community reporting: the app lets residents report illegal dumps, creating positive social pressure in the neighborhood

Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

To get started quickly:

20 manual carts (not yet electric), 3 collectors in the Grand Yoff neighborhood, 200 households subscribed at 3,000 FCFA/month, partnership with a local plastic recycler.
