The Problem
Senegalese national media (RTS, 2STV, TFM) cover little of the hyper-local realities of neighborhoods. Residents of Parcelles Assainies, Yoff, or Guédiawaye have no dedicated media for their daily life, cultural events, or neighborhood issues. Local businesses have no accessible platform to reach neighborhood residents at a reasonable cost.
The Opportunity
TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels have democratized short video production and consumption. Wolof is underrepresented in digital content even though it is spoken by 80% of Senegalese. Local SMEs are looking for cheaper alternatives to television for their advertising.
The Concept
DëkkTok creates YouTube/Instagram/TikTok channels dedicated to each major Dakar neighborhood (one channel per neighborhood). Each channel publishes 3 short videos per week: neighborhood news, portrait of a local entrepreneur, and a weekly 'good deal'. Videos are in Wolof with French subtitles. Monetization comes from local merchant advertising (bakery, pharmacy, private school) from 25,000 FCFA/month. A team of 2 journalist-videographers covers 5 neighborhoods simultaneously.
