Explore this ideaDigiFarm — Agricultural Inputs Marketplace
Digital supply platform for certified seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides for Senegalese farmers, with field delivery and input credit.
The Problem
Senegalese farmers often buy poor quality or counterfeit agricultural inputs (seeds, fertilizers) from unscrupulous local resellers, reducing their yields by 30 to 50%. Access to certified inputs often involves a long trip to town and upfront payment that farmers don't have at the start of the season. SONACOS and other official distributors have incomplete distribution chains in rural areas.
The Opportunity
The Senegalese government subsidizes 50% of the cost of certified fertilizers but the subsidy doesn't always reach small farmers due to inefficient distribution. The rise of mobile money in rural areas (Wave now covers 90% of communes) makes digital input credit possible. The agricultural inputs market in Senegal is estimated at 80 billion FCFA/year.
The Concept
DigiFarm is a mobile and USSD app that allows farmers to order certified inputs (ISRA seeds, NPK fertilizer, approved pesticides) directly from their field, delivered to their door within 48 hours. An input credit system (repayable after harvest) is offered to farmers with a verified cultivation history. DigiFarm sources directly from official suppliers (ISRA, SONACOS, ICS) and organizes logistics through local distribution networks. Each product carries a scannable authenticity QR code.
The "Secret Sauce" (USP)
- Authenticity QR code: the farmer scans the product before paying to verify certification — end of counterfeit inputs that destroy crops
- Harvest-repayable input credit: farmers order now and pay after selling their harvest — perfect alignment with their cash flow cycle
- Direct sourcing from official suppliers: DigiFarm eliminates 2-3 intermediaries from the chain, reducing price by 15-20% compared to local shops
