FabrikAfrik — Local Textile Manufacturing

Technical textile manufacturing unit (school uniforms, professional attire, workwear) for Senegalese companies and institutions, substituting Asian imports.

Problem

The Problem

Senegal imports over 80% of its textiles and clothing from Asia (China, Bangladesh), representing a foreign exchange outflow of 200 billion FCFA per year. Senegalese companies looking for quality uniforms or workwear struggle to find a reliable, punctual, standards-compliant local supplier. The local textile sector is fragmented among small artisan tailors with no industrial capacity.

Opportunity

The Opportunity

The PSE's 'made in Senegal' policy and local preference quotas in public tenders create captive demand. Over 3,000 public and private schools need school uniforms every year. Booming mining, oil, and construction companies (TotalEnergies, Woodside) are looking for certified PPE (personal protective equipment) produced locally.

The Concept

FabrikAfrik sets up a 500 m² semi-industrial sewing unit equipped with 30 industrial sewing machines, specialized in large-volume B2B orders. Target clients are schools (uniforms), companies (smocks, polos, workwear), and institutions (security uniforms). A styling and pattern office ensures prototypes in 48 hours. A simple MRP system manages orders, fabric stock, and delivery deadlines. Fabrics are initially imported from Asia then progressively replaced by local fabric (bazin, wax).

The "Secret Sauce" (USP)

  • 48h prototype turnaround: the client sees their model in 2 days — a break from 3 weeks with artisan tailors and 3 months for Asian orders
  • PPE certification: the only locally certified EN ISO unit for protective equipment, opening the high-margin oil and mining market
  • Progressive local fabric integration: start with imported fabric for quality assurance, then substitute with Senegalese bazin and wax — credible 'made in Senegal' argument

Minimum Viable Product (MVP)

To get started quickly:

Workshop with 10 sewing machines, 5 professional seamstresses, first school uniform orders (3 private schools × 500 students), 3-week delivery time.
