The Problem
Senegalese tourism is ultra-concentrated in Dakar and Saly, leaving regions of exceptional beauty (Casamance, Sine-Saloum, Ferlo, Groundnut Basin) virtually unexploited. International tourists seek authentic and sustainable experiences but find no reliable booking infrastructure outside major hotels. Local communities don't benefit from tourism revenues, which are captured by foreign players.
The Opportunity
Responsible and adventure tourism is the most dynamic segment of global tourism (+15%/year). Senegal has unique natural assets in West Africa: Casamance, the Sine-Saloum Delta (UNESCO), Niokolo-Koba National Park. Dakar's expatriate and business tourist clientele is looking for authentic weekend getaways within 5 hours' drive.
The Concept
SunuTrek lists and commercializes tourist experiences managed by local communities: overnight stays in village camps, pirogue trips in Sine-Saloum, treks in Casamance with certified local guides, bush camp stays in Ferlo. Each experience is designed and managed by a local cooperative trained by SunuTrek. The online booking platform accepts international (Stripe) and local (Wave) payments. SunuTrek returns 80% of revenue to communities and keeps a 20% commission.
