Explore this ideaTërangaBeauté — Natural African Cosmetics
Natural cosmetics brand based on African ingredients (shea, hibiscus, baobab oil) formulated by dermatologists for Black and mixed-race skin.
The Problem
Black skin is largely underserved by the global cosmetics industry: spots, hyperpigmentation, and dehydration are poorly addressed by products formulated for Western skin types. African women often use harmful lightening products (mercury, hydroquinone) for lack of effective and accessible natural alternatives. Ultra-effective African ingredients (shea, marula, baobab) are exported raw and processed in Europe before being resold in Africa at premium prices.
The Opportunity
The natural cosmetics market for Black skin in Sub-Saharan Africa is estimated at $8 billion in 2026 and growing at 14% per year. The rise of African beauty content creators (Afrobeauty) on YouTube and TikTok is building a community of buyers seeking authenticity. Local formulation reduces costs by 60% compared to imported brands.
The Concept
TërangaBeauté develops a range of 8 treatments formulated by a Senegalese dermatologist using 100% African ingredients certified free of toxic products: shea and niacinamide unifying cream, baobab oil radiance serum, hibiscus exfoliating mask, cocoa butter lip balm. Products are manufactured in Senegal in a DPSA-certified laboratory. Distribution is mixed: online stores, pharmacies, beauty institutes, and export to the diaspora. Communication relies on dermatologists and African beauty influencers.
The "Secret Sauce" (USP)
- Formulated by a dermatologist: unique scientific guarantee on the Senegalese market, total differentiation from unvalidated artisan cosmetics
- 100% African, 0% toxic: certified mercury-free, hydroquinone-free, paraben-free — meets growing demand for safe cosmetics for Black skin
- Ingredient traceability: each product indicates the village that produced the shea or baobab, strong storytelling for the European diaspora
